MANILA – The Far
Eastern University Lady Tamaraws bucked a slight hiccup in the second set to
sweep the National University Lady Bulldogs and win the Shakey's V-League
Season 11 First Conference championship Sunday at the San Juan Arena.
Led by alumna and
guest player Rachelle Ann Daquis, the Lady Tams carved out a 25-21, 25-23, and
25-18 victory, wrapping up the match in under two hours.
It was FEU’s first
championship in the Shakey’s V-League and it came at the expense of the
defending champions NU, who were led by reigning Most Valuable Player Dindin
Santiago.
Daquis top-scored
for FEU with 15 points on 12 attacks, two blocks, and a service ace to win the
Player of the Game award. She was later named Finals Most Valuable Player as
well.
Bernadette Pons
scored 13 points and Jovelyn Gonzaga added 11 markers for the Lady Tams, who
had to battle through a nip-and-tuck second set which saw the Lady Bulldogs
take a 16-14 lead.
But the Lady Tams
were able to rally to take the lead and eventually win the second set after
Jaja Santiago was called for an overreaching violation.
The third set was
briefly interrupted after power went out at the San Juan Arena. But after the
second technical timeout, FEU pulled away from NU thanks to attacks from Daquis
as well as a host of errors by the Lady Bulldogs.
Santiago was the
only NU player to score in double-digits with 12 points. Younger sister Jaja
and Myla Pablo combined for 12, but their efforts were not enough to hold off
the Lady Tams.
FEU had beaten NU,
26-24, 26-24, and 25-22, in the first game of the best-of-three series last
week to move closer to its first ever Shakey's V-League crown.
