ISANG PASASALAMAT

Hi fellow tamaraws!

Ako si Christine Agno, Libero, isang Tamaraw, SIGNING OFF NO. 1.

Maraming Salamat.

CONGRATULATIONS!!! FEU LADY TAMARAWS

The Far Eastern University Lady Tamaraws dethroned last season’s champs, the National University Lady Bulldogs, using a straight sets win, 25-21 25-23 25-18, Sunday at the FilOil Flying V Arena, to sweep the best-of-three Finals series of the Shakey’s V-League Season 11 - First Conference.

The Lady Tamaraws dominated the league upon the arrival of reinforcements Rachelle Ann Daquis and Jovelyn Gonzaga.

“Sila talaga yung nagsalba sa amin,” Coach Shaq Delos Santos admitted as his team struggled in the preliminary round prior to the addition of the veterans. “Salba talaga dahil almost di kami makapasok sa quarterfinals.”

The additional experience of the duo helped FEU, but Daquis insisted that it was an entire team effort.

“Siguro tumaas lang yung confidence ng mga bata kasi alam nila na may ate sila,” said the Finals Most Valuable Player. “Pero sa totoo lang, sila talaga yung nagstep-up.”

In the first set, the Lady Bulldogs entered the first technical timeout on top at 8-5, sparked by Dindin Santiago’s ever-reliable offense. But the guest duo of Daquis and Gonzaga prevented the Lady Bulldogs from picking up any momentum with a variety of drop shots and well-placed kills to the open zone.

FEU kept up the pressure with a run, highlighted by Bernadette Pons’ three consecutive service aces that brought the Lady Tamaraws on top by the second technical timeout at 16-12. They continued their surge, tacking on six straight points to give them their biggest lead of the set at 23-14.

With the Lady Tamaraws at an early set point of 24-17, the Lady Bulldogs responded with a Santiago winner, an Ivy Perez drop shot and relentless front-row attacks. In addition, unforced errors from FEU inched NU within three, 24-21. But the FEU lead was too big to overcome for the Lady Bulldogs as a Mary Palma cross-court winner sealed the opening set with a score of 25-21.

The second set opened with an NU offensive barrage as they tallied an immediate 9-4 advantage. But just like how the Lady Tamaraws retaliated in the first set, Daquis, Gonzaga and Pons sparked a 6-2 scoring run that tied things at 11-all. Both teams exchanged scores as the Santiago sisters, along with Myla Pablo and Carmina Aganon, excelled in a series of combination plays.

The set boiled down to a back-and-forth affair as FEU reached set point, care of a Palma running spike at 24-22. But FEU then followed up their set point with an unforced miscue that placed the Lady Bulldogs within one at 24-23. Nevertheless, the Lady Tamaraws still emerged on top as an overreaching infraction by Jaja Santiago ended the second set with the score of 25-23.

A power surge halted play in the third set during the 10-8 mark, with FEU on top. Despite the stoppage, the Lady Tamaraws were still able to maintain the pace of the match, and cruised throughout the set. They finished the match with an explosive Gonzaga quick attack for a 25-18 victory.

Dindin Santiago led NU with 12 points in the losing effort followed by Jaja Santiago and Myla Pablo's six markers each. The Lady Bulldogs were heavily outnumbered in the service department, 10-2.

Yna Papa tallied eight points and paired it with 21 excellent sets, which can be attributed to FEU’s balanced scoring effort. Daquis finished with a game-high of 15 points and was followed by Pons’ 13, Gonzaga’s 11 and Palma’s eight. - AMD, GMA News

MANILA – The Far Eastern University Lady Tamaraws bucked a slight hiccup in the second set to sweep the National University Lady Bulldogs and win the Shakey's V-League Season 11 First Conference championship Sunday at the San Juan Arena.

Led by alumna and guest player Rachelle Ann Daquis, the Lady Tams carved out a 25-21, 25-23, and 25-18 victory, wrapping up the match in under two hours.

It was FEU’s first championship in the Shakey’s V-League and it came at the expense of the defending champions NU, who were led by reigning Most Valuable Player Dindin Santiago.

Daquis top-scored for FEU with 15 points on 12 attacks, two blocks, and a service ace to win the Player of the Game award. She was later named Finals Most Valuable Player as well.

Bernadette Pons scored 13 points and Jovelyn Gonzaga added 11 markers for the Lady Tams, who had to battle through a nip-and-tuck second set which saw the Lady Bulldogs take a 16-14 lead.

But the Lady Tams were able to rally to take the lead and eventually win the second set after Jaja Santiago was called for an overreaching violation.

The third set was briefly interrupted after power went out at the San Juan Arena. But after the second technical timeout, FEU pulled away from NU thanks to attacks from Daquis as well as a host of errors by the Lady Bulldogs.

Santiago was the only NU player to score in double-digits with 12 points. Younger sister Jaja and Myla Pablo combined for 12, but their efforts were not enough to hold off the Lady Tams.

FEU had beaten NU, 26-24, 26-24, and 25-22, in the first game of the best-of-three series last week to move closer to its first ever Shakey's V-League crown.

MANILA, Philippines - The Lady Tamaraws finally reached the summit.

Far Eastern University zoomed to their first Shakey's V-League title on Sunday, May 25 at the Arena in San Juan as they closed out the best-of-3 Finals series in just two games by clobbering former champions National University Lady Bulldogs, 25-21, 25-23, 25-18, in the Season 11 First Conference.

"Sobrang happy," remarked FEU head coach Shaq Delos Santos after the game. (We are very happy.)

"Galing din kami sa baba nung eliminations eh. Unexpected din pero binigay sa amin ni God so sobrang thankful." (We came from the bottom of the eliminations. It was unexpected but God gave it to us so we're happy.)

The Lady Bulldogs found it a huge problem for them to close out sets, pushing strong at the beginning only to lose their footing towards the end.

NU's struggles, especially with their 23 errors, left them stuck in a deep 2-0 set disadvantage. And not even lulls in the game could help them recover.

As power outtages due to rain dimmed the Arena a couple of times in the middle of Set 3, the Tamaraws managed to maintain their momentum and resume their rampage once the lights came back to life - to the sheer dismay of the Lady Bulldogs.

Even as NU stayed within striking distance at the start of the third, the Lady Tamaraws began pulling away.

After a Carmin Aganon (5 points) hit towed the Lady Bulldogs to within 10-11, Mary Joy Palma (8 points) led FEU on a spurt that put them on top, 14-11. But a couple of points from the towering Jaja Santiago (6 points) and Aganon kept NU in the game, 14-13.

Former Lady Tamaraw and now guest player Rachel Anne Daquis then took over as FEU began creating some significant distance between them and an already visibly distraught NU.

Daquis eventually bagged the Most Valuable Player (MVP) plum after scoring 19 points in Game 1 and 15 points during the title-clinching Game 2.

Momentum took a turn for the worse for NU when their errors began piling up, leading to a 20-13 margin favoring FEU.

When the Lady Tamaraws reached their 21st point as Geneveve Casugod (4 points) scored on a running attack that hit off the hands of Dindin Santiago, veteran guest player Jovelyn Gonzaga reminded her younger teammates that they were a mere 4 points away from victory.

Gonzaga would later score the championship point on a kill to finish with 11 markers.

"Sila talaga yung nag-salba sa amin," Delos Santos commended his two guest players Daquis and Gonzaga for helping the team up. "Almost hindi kami makapasok sa quarter finals kung tutuusin." (They saved us. We almost even didn't make it to the quarterfinals.)

Meanwhile, the 12 points of conference MVP Dindin Santiago were not enough to power her team through as she missed the offensive support of her sister Jaja and Myla Pablo, who only had 6 markers.

For an FEU squad struggling and rebuilding over the past two UAAP seasons, this V-League title is a breakthrough and a much-needed morale-booster for its younger members.

"Yung mga bata sobrang hanga kami kasi kami ni Jovelyn (Gonzaga) nag-step up kami as a leader pero sila hindi sila nagpapaiwan," Daquis explained. "Kung umaangat kami, umaangat din sila. Kaya kami nanalo kasi buo kami."

(We were very impressed with the younger players. Jovelyn and I stepped up as leaders but they didn't back down as well. When we rise, they rise too. We won because we were one unit.)

According to Delos Santos, who has now won his 4th V-League title (the previous 3 were with UST) the Lady Tamaraws have no definite plan yet for what's next.

But this championship will serve as a good foundation for UAAP Season 77.

Scores

FEU: Daquis 15, Pons 13, Gonzaga 11, Palma 8, Casugod 4, Papa 1.

NU: Santiago D. 12, Pablo 6, Santiago J. 6, Aganon 5, Dadang 4, De Leon 3, Mandapat 1.

Set scores: 25-21, 25-23, 25-18.

MANILA, Philippines — Far Eastern University completed a series title sweep with an emphatic straight-set romp of National University Sunday in the Shakey’s V-League Season 11 First Conference at Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan.

After scrambling to reach the quarterfinals and overcoming a 0-1 deficit in the semifinals, the Lady Tamaraws finished off the heavily favored Lady Bulldogs, 25-21, 25-23, 25-18, in Game 2 of their best-of-three championship duel.

“It’s unexpected,” said coach Shaq delos Santos as FEU nailed its first title in the league. “But our team was consistent and played with a high morale. Even if we were up against taller opponents, our players gave their best.”

Rachel Anne Daquis bagged the Finals Most Valuable Player after another sterling performance that powered the Lady Tamaraws to a sweep of the Lady Bulldogs, the defending champions who marched into the Finals with only a single loss.

Daquis unloaded 15 points built on 12 kills and three blocks, while Bernadette Pons, who teamed up with Mary Palma for six of FEU’s 10 service aces, finished with 13 points.

“It was all about teamwork,” said Jovelyn Gonzaga, who teamed up with Daquis as FEU rallied from early deficits in the first two sets. “Our younger players proved to be competitors.”

Gonzaga added 11 points capped by the match-clinching smash in a dominating third set where the Lady Tamaraws zoomed to a 20-13 advantage.

Earlier, Thai reinforcement Pacharee Sangmuang topscored with 14 as Adamson secured third place with a masterful 25-15, 25-18, 25-22 victory over University of Santo Tomas. With a report from Paul Kennedy A. Lintag, Contributor

MANILA, Philippines -- Newly crowned Shakey's V-League Season 11- First Conference champion Far Eastern U has already felt victory the moment it made it the semifinals of the country's biggest volleyball event.

After all, the Lady Tams' main goal is to get as much experience as they can here and use it when in the UAAP where it should be regarded as one of the legitimate contenders of the throne precariously held by the Ateneo Lady Eagles.

"Our goal here in the Shakey's V-League is to just gain as much experience as we can and hopefully apply it in the UAAP," said FEU coach Shaq delos Santos in Filipino moments after steering FEU to an improbably title sweep of last year's winner National U at The Arena in San Juan City Sunday.

"Making the semifinals and the finals and winning the championship are just bonuses for our hardwork," he added.

Delos Santos were all praises to his players especially on the troika of Bernadette Pons, Mary Remy Joy Palma and libero Christine Agno for their exceptional performances the whole of the conference.

The power-hitting Pons shone the brightest as she came through against an NU team expected to also contend in the UAAP volley wars like Ateneo and La Salle.

Palma, for her part, has shown huge improvement in terms of her attacking style and net defense while Agno has further sharpened her defensive skills by copping the Best Receiver award.

"Pons, Palma and Agno have gained a lot from this experience. The whole team as well. The confidence we got here will go a long, long way in the UAAP," said delos Santos.

Rachel Daquis, an FEU alumna who joined the team as a guest player, agrees.

"Playing in the Shakey's V-League toughened me up as a player and I know it did to them (Lady Tams) what it did to me with this experience," said Daquis, who was adjudged finals MVP after firing 15 hits in the series-clinching 25-21, 25-23, 25-18 win over NU.
