La Salle vets reign as stats leaders in 74th UAAP women's volleyball tournament

La Salle veterans Abigail Maraño, Michelle Gumabao and Cha Cruz are the three main reasons why the defending champions Lady Spikers are undefeated in the 74th UAAP women's volleyball tournament.

La Salle's own "Big 3" are currently lording it over in the statistical departments, based on the information released by official statistician TMX Sports, after six games in the first round.

Maraño is one of the top contenders for the Best Spiker award with a 44.94 percent success rate. Ateneo’s Dzi Gervacio (40.91) and University of Santo Tomas's Maika Ortiz with (40.69) came in second and third, respectively.

Maraño also placed second in scoring with 97 points on 80 attacks, 13 blocks and four service aces. She trails UST's Maru Banaticla who has 104 points on 92 spikes, seven service winners and five blocks.

Gumabao, daughter of former pro player Dennis Roldan, leads the blocking department with a 0.73 average per set while FEU’s Mayjorie Roxas (0.61) and Maraño (0.59) placed second and third, respectively.

Cruz, on the other hand, has the highest efficiency rating in serves with a 0.77 average per set followed by Adamson's Sheila Pineda (0.61), and La Salle rookie Ara Galang and UE's Kite Rosale (0.55).

National University standout Cai Nepomuceno is the season’s third best scorer with 91 points on 81 attacks, eight blocks and two service aces. Ateneo skipper Fille Cainglet had 90 hits and FEU's Rosemarie Vargas chalked up 86 to complete the top five.

FEU's Gyzelle Sy leads the Best Setter race with a 10.65 average per set, followed by UST's Rhea Dimaculangan (10.09) and two-time winner Jem Ferrer of Ateneo (9.70).

Lady Tamaraws libero Christine Agno is ahead in digs with a 5.04 average per set, while Lady Falcon Angelica Vasquez runs second (4.96) and Lady Eagle Denden Lazaro third (4.90).

Vasquez tops the receiving department with a 35 percent efficiency rating, followed by Cainglet (34.48 percent) percent and Agno (26.67).

The first round of eliminations officially ends on January 7 at The Arena with the 9 a.m. Adamson-Ateneo men's match opening the hostilities. La Salle takes on UP at 10:30 a.m. in the other men's game.

Women's matches will have FEU facing NU at 2 p.m. while Adamson collides with Ateneo at 3:30 p.m. — JVP, GMA News
