Manila — Earlier today, the first ever draft of the Philippine Superliga was held at the newly-established NBA Cafe at the SM Aura mall in Taguig City.

Besides the incoming rookies of the league, players whose names weren’t included in the “protected players” list submitted by the league’s teams a few weeks ago were available to be drafted. Prior to the drafting, a lottery took place to determine the order of the draft process.

Former National University standout Dindin Santiago was selected as the top overall pick of the draft by the Petron Blaze Spikers. Coming in second was former DLSU team captain and two-time UAAP MVP Aby Marano, who will team up with former comrades Melissa Gohing, Stephanie Mercado, and Michelle Gumabao in Air Asia — the PSL’s newest team.

With the third overall pick, RC Cola, which finished last in the Philippine Superliga Grand Prix, selected DLSU alum Iari Yongco. Not long after, the Cagayan Valley Lady Rising Suns took Janine Marciano out of San Beda College with the fourth selection.

Rounding up the first round were Ateneo’s Jamenea Ferrer, who will reunite with former head coach Roger Gorayeb in PLDT, as the fifth pick; Norie Diaz out of UPHSD, who will play for Cignal after being taken with the sixth pick; and Christine Agno, who will help Generika-Army (formerly known as TMS-Army) try to win a third straight PSL championship, after being taken with the seventh selection.
